Desert Mirror’s neighborhood

The lovely and comfortable Desert Mirror Guest House is located adjacent to the Desert Mirror Zendo, in a secluded back yard in the Nob Hill neighborhood of central Albuquerque.  There are churches right across the street and in the next block, which provides for a very quiet atmosphere.

NE corner of kitchenette

The communal ground floor of this fully furnished, one-bedroom retreat cottage offers a kitchenette, bathroom, and dharma library in the living room/dining room.  This is where we host Buddhist movie nights and receptions after monthly dharma talks and teacher visits.

The upstairs loft bedroom, which looks out into the top branches of the fruit trees in the garden, is private live/work space for 1 or 2 Zen student guests, visiting teachers, academics on sabbatical, or others who need a quiet, contemplative getaway for periods ranging from a week to several months.

SE side of meditation garden

The Guest House residency program provides guests with a sample taste of residential Zen practice, and in turn provides Desert Mirror  – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit – with a modest but relatively steady source of program support for the zendo practice and maintaining the meditation gardens.

Residents are expected to participate in the posted practice schedule and other sangha activities, and to support the community by practicing “Leave No Trace” in the downstairs area  – maintaining the public spaces of the guest house in a Zen-style clean, inviting condition.
